Buena Vista and Chaffee County are surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest. There are also two wilderness areas within these national forests; the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness and the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness. There are miles and miles of hiking trails throughout the area with difficulty levels from beginner to very advanced. Many of the trails lead to mountain peaks or high mountain lakes. The Colorado Trail runs the length of the valley from Leadville to Salida.

The Hi Rocky has a large assortment of topographic maps of the surrounding area and Forest Service maps as well. The staff at Hi Rocky enjoys the area as our backyard and can offer many suggestions of where to hike.
