Hi Rocky Store Fishing Report:

July 03, 2009

The river has been hit by a late runoff and the water is high and mighty making fishing difficult! There is a caddis hatch going on just north of BV and fishing close to shore is producing some great fishing even with the high water. The farther up the river you go the less water there is and the fishing gets better. Caddis, Grasshoppers and black ants are the best bet right now.

Twin lakes is open and the fishing is for rainbows from the shore at the power plant and along the south shore. The rainbows are being caught on salmon eggs, night crawlers and rainbow power bait along the north shore. Fishing from a boat along the south shore with small lures and flies has been great. The lake trout are still feeding aggressively because of the cool spring and summer and can be caught using tube jigs and sucker meat jigged on the bottom.

The Mt. Elbert Forebay has been good for rainbows and some snake river cutthroats. Most of the fish are being caught on night crawlers, salmon eggs and power bait fished on the bottom. Some good lake trout are being caught with tube jigs and sucker meat along the east shore. This time of year there are some great blue wing olive hatches ang the fly fishing is great along the dam on the south side.

Antero Reservoir is open and fishing from the shore has been good! There are some good fish in Antero and are great fun to catch. Nymphs like prince nymphs and bead head damsels are best. Small lures cast from shore or a boat are working very well. Rooster tails cast into the shallows and pulled into deep water are working and so are silver kastmasters with a green stripe. Green copper johns, prince nymphs and bead head damsel flies are working well.

Cottonwood lake is open and the fishing is good along the south shore. The fishing is good along the road and up at the inlet. Salmon eggs and nightcrawlers are working the best. Cottonwood lake was stocked last week and there are a lot of carry over fish as well.

Chalk lake and wrights lake are both good fishing. Wrights lake is flies and lures only but there are a lot of bugs on the water now and fly fishing is great! Mosquitos and dead chickens are the best bet. Chalk lake has been stocked and night crawlers and salmon eggs are working the best. Lures like kastmasters are also working well tipped with a small piece of night crawlers.

Clear Creek Reservoir has been stocked and fishing has been good from shore with small lures, salmon eggs, night crawlers and flies. The lake will reopen this year for boating with an inspection station. It should be a good year for fishing and some really nice Tiger muskies are being caught.

Turquoise Lake is wide open and the fish are hungry after a long hard winter. Rainbows and cutthroats along the north shore and east shore in shallow water are hitting Hi Rocky Specials really well. If they hit to light try tipping them with a meal worm for a stronger strike. Also buoyant lures and Kastmasters are working well from shore. The lake trout are hitting really well on tube jigs and suckermeat. The white tube jigs are working the best.

Hayden meadows is open and the fish jumping all over the lake. This is a great weekend to use blue wing olives and even some caddis flies. Pistol Pete's green maribou and renegades and night crawlers are also working good.

Franz lake in Salida has been good fishing this spring using Boyant lures and montera marvels and was stocked recently.

Hayden meadows and crystal reservoir have been stocked and there are a lot of fish. Mepps, panther martins and buoyant lures are working best. There has been a few caddis hatching up there along with some blue wing olives.

The fishing is great all over the valley and the Division of Wildlife has begun their summer stocking program. The hi mountain lakes are all opened up now and are all accessable for fishing. This is a great time of year to catch some high lake cutthroats and get into the back country.
