Use Rapala lures and large buoyant lures in red/gold, rainbow and brown trout for big lake trout.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR: this lake has been one of the best lakes for great fishing this summer. night crawlers are still the hot ticket because of the rains on the upper end and salmon eggs are working very well all around the lake. ARKANSAS RIVER: the flows continue to be low right now and wading and crossing the river allows access to new fishing areas.  the water temperature is starting to rise with the warm weather which is starting to bring on the caddis hatch in the lower sections of the river. Caddis have been seen up as far as stockyard bridge. fishing 0n the river is very good right now! the warm weather has really gotten the fish moving and feeding. The blue wing olives are starting to come off all along the river now.  we are seeing blue wings olive hatches even up in buena vista on cottonwood creek. The are a lot of bugs on the water during the day and the fish are actively feeding on the surFACE. lure fishing is also very good, panther martin yellow with red spots and black with yellow spots are best. a cold front is moving into the valley slowing down the runoff and will slow down the caddis but, the blue wing olives should be excellent this weekend.

TWIN LAKES: the lakes are open and fishing from shore is very good. the boat ramp will not open until May 20th.  rainbows and Lake trout are both feeding along the shore. the lake trout are cruising the shoreline searching for small fish and are aggressively hitting large rapala lures that look like rainbows and browns. the rainbows are hitting salmon eggs, pistol pete ugly and copper gold buoyant lures.

You have to sneak up on them. the boat ramp opens may 5th.

Cottonwood lake: the lake is open now and fishing is good! the fish are hungry after winter and are hitting night crawlers, salmon eggs and pistol pete ugly flies. the south shore along is very good but there is still snow in the trees.

the weather is on the change and snow is expected tomorrow and into saturday. i expect the storm to pass this valley earlier than denver is expecting so saturday afternoon and sunday should be decent for fishing. the hatches will slow down some if is cools down to much but the blue wing olives will love the cloudy days.

The blue wing olives are starting to come off all along the river now.  we are seeing blue wings olive hatches even up in buena vista on cottonwood creek. The are a lot of bugs on the water during the day and the fish are actively feeding on the surFACE. lure fishing is also very good, panther martin yellow with red spots and black with yellow spots are best. one of the hottest items right now are platte river pete in size 12. these can be fished with a fly and a bubble or with a fly rod they're killing it with either method.

TWIN LAKES: the lake has finally thawed completely, but the boat ramp will not open until May 20th. fishing from shore is excellent right now both for rainbows and Lake trout. the lake trout are cruzing the shoreline searching for small fish and are aggressively hitting large rapala lures that look like rainbows and browns. the rainbows are hitting salmon eggs, pistol pete ugly and copper gold buoyant lures.

MOUNT ELBERT FOREBay:  it is really good fishing for rainbows and  big lake trout. Pistol pete's black egg sucking leach, platte river pete's and ugly size 10 are the hot items right now for rainbows. casting some of the large rainbow rapalas are good for the lake trout.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR:   the lake has thawed completely and fishing is good  for rainbows with pistol petes, night crawlers and salmon eggs. Gold and red buoyant lures cast from the rocks at the boat ramp work well. walking the south shore casting large rainbow rapalas will get you some 40 inch tiger muskies. You have to sneak up on them. the boat ramp opens may 5th

Cottonwood lake: the lake is open now and fishing is good! the fish are hungry after winter and are hitting night crawlers, salmon eggs and pistol pete ugly flies .

wrights lake: the lake is open and spring fishing is good. this lake is flies and lures only. ugly pistol petes and panther martin lures yellow with red spots are the best bet here. FLIES ARE STARTING TO WORK WELL HERE EITHER MIDGES OR blue wing olives.

chalk lake: the lake is very low right now because there is no water running into it. waiting for some runoff water to fill it up for fishing to get better.

SPINNEY MOUNTAIN RESERVOIR IS OPEN FOR FISHING AND SO IS ELEVENMILE RESERVOIR. BOTH OF THESE LAKES WILL BE EXCELLENT SPRING FISHING NOW BECAUSE THE ICE HAS JUST COME OFF.

THE WEATHER looks to be great this week and the fishing on the river is excellent. there will start to be a little runoff coming down this week changing the color of the water, but should not effect the fishing. many of the lakes have just opened up and the spring fishing is great.

ARKANSAS RIVER: the flows on the river are starting to drop as the reservoirs close to give the little trout fry a chance to grow before runoff. This means that the fishing is just going to get better over the next few months. the river is very good right now! the warm weather has really gotten the fish moving and feeding. The blue wing olives are starting to come off especially on the lower end from salida down. we had some really good weather this last week and we should start seeing blue wings olive hatches moving upstream. get ready for those warm cloudy days for some great fishing. lure fishing is also very good, panther martin yellow with red spots and black with yellow spots are best. one of the hottest items right now are platte river pete in size 12. these can be fished with a fly and a bubble or with a fly rod they're killing it with either method.

TWIN LAKES: the ice on the lake is not safe anymore and the shoreline is really questionable.   The open water at the power plant is good for rainbows and some nice lake trout are being caught with large rapalas and buoyant lures. expect the open water to increase over time and be prepared for the excellent ice off conditions for big Lake trout.

MOUNT ELBERT FOREBAY:  the best open water lake in the area right now is the forebay!  it has been really good fishing for rainbows and even a few big lake trout. Pistol pete's black egg sucking leach, brown maribou and ugly size 10 are the hot items right now. casting some of the large rainbow rapalas are good for the lake trout.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR:  the upper end of the lake is open and the shoreline is also open. the ice is still about 10 inches but you may not be able to get onto it because of the open water on shore. the open water is good fishing for rainbows with pistol petes, night crawlers and salmon eggs.

Cottonwood lake: the lake is still frozen solid. the north shore starting to open up and will make getting on the ice difficult. you can still get on the ice from the south shore but. the upper end is opening a little making for some good ice off fishing. try casting a pistol pete along the edge of the ice or drop a night crawler off the egg.

wrights lake: the lake is open and spring fishing is good. this lake is flies and lures only. ugly pistol petes and buoyant lures red/gold are the best bet here.

chalk lake: the lake is very low right now because there is no water running into it. waiting for some runoff water to fill it up for fishing to get better.

we did not get any snow in the valley from this last storm. the wind is blowing but it is expected to die down later and the weekend looks like it is going to be decent. sunday could be a great blue wing olive day on the river.

ARKANSAS RIVER: the flows on the river are higher because the reservoirs are moving water down stream to make room for the high snow pack. the river is very good right now! the warm weather has really got the fish moving and feeding. Nymphs are still the best bet, Golden stones, prince nymphs and pheasant tails. lure fishing is also very good, panther martin yellow with red spots and black with yellow spots are best. one of the hottest items right now are platte river pete in size 12. these can be fished with a fly and a bubble or with a fly rod they're killing it with either method.

TWIN LAKES: the ice on the lake is still good in some spots, but with the warm weather it will starting fading fast. The open water at the power plant is good for rainbows and some nice lake trout are being caught with large rapalas and buoyant lures.

MOUNT ELBERT FOREBAY:  ONE OF THE BEST LAKES IN THE AREA FOR A VARIETY OF FISH. THIS IS A GREAT LAKE FOR RAINBOW AND SNAKE RIVER CUTTHROATS. PISTOL PETES BROWN MARABOU, GOLD SPARKLE AND BLACK PANTHER MARABOU ARE BEST. LARGE KASTMASTERS, BUOYANT RED/GOLD. the warm weather has opened up the lake and the area around the lake so fishing is somewhat easier.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR:  the ice is still good for the most part, you will have to be careful along the shoreline.  THE FISHING is still very good here for rainbows ALONG THE NORTH SHORE WITH SMALL JIGS TIPPED WITH POWER BAIT, WAX WORMS OR meal worms. THE AREA JUST EAST OF THE BOAT RAMP CAN BE VERY GOOD.  SMALL SWEDISH PIMPLES JIGGED WITH A LOT OF ACTION WORK ON THE KOKANEE. this lake is one of the local favorites and gives people and families easy access and good fishing. there are lots of fish still being caught even this late in the season.

Cottonwood lake: the lake is still frozen solid and will stay that way for some time. it is in such a hole that it does not get a lot of sun and it is sill cold at night up there. the fishing has slowed down a little, but fish are still getting caught and it is a great place to take kids to. small jigs tipped with meal worms or wax worms is the best bet.

wrights lake: the lake is open and spring fishing is good as the ice comes off. nymphs and dead chickens are the best bet right now here.

spring fever is starting to hit everyone both on the front range and in the high country. remember that we are the high country and most everything is still frozen up here. the roads west are still snow bound and the lakes and reservoirs are still frozen. the east side of the valley is much more accessible and the arkansas is a great place to fish.

ARKANSAS RIVER: Spring fishing is just around the corner as march starts to roll in some warmer weather. we are starting to get those warm wet spring snows and the blue wing olive hatches are not far off.  the fish are still hitting nymphs and golden stones, pheasant tail nymphs and prince nymphs. The coming week looks to be very nice  after the snows move out and should make for some great fishing days. it is best to fish in mid day when the water is the warmest to get the fish moving. night crawlers are still working very well drifted along the bottom in the deep pools.

TWIN LAKES: THE LAKE still has good ice on it right now for the most part. there is still some slushy areas out on the main part of the lake, but not nearly as bad as early on. There is about 10 inches of ice on the lakes. snowmobiles and 4 wheelers are still able to get on the lake. the fishing has been good for slot sized lake trout off the boat ramp and up at the power plant. fishing has slowed down for the lake trout because they are starting to get a little jig shy. there are still some tricks to catching them is you have the patience and the right gear.

MOUNT ELBERT FOREBAY: THE WEST END OF THE LAKE IS FROZEN AND THE OPEN WATER IS still ON THE EAST END BY THE INLET AND OUTLET. ONE OF THE BEST LAKES IN THE AREA FOR A VARIETY OF FISH. THIS IS A GREAT LAKE FOR RAINBOW AND SNAKE RIVER CUTTHROATS. PISTOL PETES BROWN MARABOU, GOLD SPARKLE AND BLACK PANTHER MARABOU ARE BEST. LARGE KASTMASTERS, BUOYANT RED/GOLD. there is a lot of snow this year and access is only at the dam on the south side. there is a lot of snow on the rocks as you go down to the water so extra care is needed.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR:  this is just a great lake.  THE FISHING is still very good here for rainbows and kokanee ALONG THE NORTH SHORE WITH SMALL JIGS TIPPED WITH POWER BAIT, WAX WORMS OR meal worms.

Cottonwood lake: this lake is very good and a great winter recreation spot. you can snow shoe and cross country ski above the lake to some very beautiful spots the fishing is good using small jigs tipped with wax worms and meal worms. the south shore gets less fishing pressure and can be very good in the corner down by the dam.

some hidden spots in the valley to try are chalk lake, hayden meadows reservoir and wrights lake. All of these lakes have nice rainbows and browns in them.

SMALL SWEDISH PIMPLES JIGGED WITH A LOT OF ACTION WORK ON THE KOKANEE. this lake is one of the local favorites and gives people and families easy access and good fishing.

COTTONWOOD LAKE: THE LAKE IS FROZEN SOLID ICE FISHING IS GOOD!! even cottonwood has fallen victim th the slush that has plagued the area lakes. it is still fishable and the ice is over 10" but care must be taken to keep from getting wet. The best bet is small jigs tipped with meal worms or wax worms.  THANKS TO THE COUNTY for keeping tHE ROAD OPEN FOR WINTER RECREATION TO THE CAMPGROUND. this is a great place to take the whole family for some winter fun, there is a sledding hill on the way up to the lake and great cross country and snow shoeing just above the lake.

TURQUOISE LAKE: THE LAKE IS FROZEN SOLID but has a lot of slush on top making it difficult to get to many of the best spots. you can get down to the lake on the east end by the dam and also just across the dam on the west side. fishing very close to shore in 8-10 feet of water is the best bet for the lake trout. use large tube jigs or airplane jigs for best results.

some hidden spots in the valley to try are chalk lake, hayden meadows reservoir and wrights lake. All of these lakes have nice rainbows and browns in them.

ARKANSAS RIVER: WINTER still has the river in its grip. there is a lot of snow on the ground in the valley, but the river is still fishing well and is accessible even with the snow. nymphs and worms worked on the bottom is the best for catching these winter fish. the river is beautiful with all the snow and fishing it can be a unique experience.

TWIN LAKES: THE LAKE IS now frozen solid and the slush ice on top was also frozen yesterday. the gate is still locked so you cannot drive a truck on it, but snowmobiles and 4 wheelers have been able to get on the lake. the fishing has been good for slot sized lake trout off the boat ramp and up at the power plant. the upper lake is not accessible at this time because of the snow and the state highway department plowed in the road to the upper boat ramp. if you can get to the lake it has had little fishing pressure. large tube jigs, airplane jigs and swedish pimples work best.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR: THE LAKE IS FROZEN SOLID AND PEOPLE ARE ICE FISHING ON IT AND SKATING. SMALL SWEDISH PIMPLES JIGGED WITH A LOT OF ACTION WORK ON THE KOKANEE.

COTTONWOOD LAKE: THE LAKE IS FROZEN SOLID ICE FISHING IS GOOD!! The best bet is small jigs tipped with meal worms or wax worms. THE ICE ON COTTONWOOD IS ABOUT 8 INCHES AND THANKS TO THE COUNTY THE ROAD IS KEPT OPEN FOR WINTER RECREATION TO THE CAMPGROUND. this is a great place to take the whole family for some winter fun, there is a sledding hill on the way up to the lake and great cross country and snow shoeing just above the lake.

TURQUOISE LAKE: THE LAKE IS FROZEN SOLID AND IS GOOD FOR ICE FISHING. THERE ARE SOME REALLY LARGE LAKE TROUT IN TURQUOISE AND LOTS OF LAKE TROUT OF REGULAR SIZE. this is an undiscovered gem in the upper arkansas valley, it does not get near the pressure twin lakes gets and produces some really nice lake trout and good numbers of rainbows. the lakers like big tube jigs fished in shallow water and the rainbows are going after small jigs tipped with meal worms.

some hidden spots in the valley to try are chalk lake, hayden meadows reservoir and wrights lake.

we have snow on the ground in buena vista and there are lots of great winter sports to do within just a few miles of town.

ARKANSAS RIVER: winter is really here this week and the snow is falling. last week fishing on the river was actually very good drifting small red worms on the bottom with a little split shot. THERE IS ICE ALONG THE BANKS AND IN THE RIVER. TWIN LAKES: The lake is frozen solid but the center is still not safe. WITH THE COLD WEATHER and snow it should be getting thicker. STICK CLOSE TO SHORE AND BE CAREFUL TO CHECK ICE DEPTH BEFORE YOU VENTURE OUT. There are people fishing along the shore line and on the upper lake and they are catching some good lake trout already.

MOUNT ELBERT FOREBAY: the west end of the lake is frozen and the open water is on the east end and by the inlet and outlet. ONE OF THE BEST LAKES IN THE AREA FOR A VARIETY OF FISH. ARKANSAS RIVER: The river is slow fishing right now. There is ice along the banks and in the river. The best bet at this time is nymphs on the bottom in deep pools or night crawlers floated along the bottom of the pools. Fish can still be caught this time of year, the areas below Salida are usually best.

TWIN LAKES: THE LAKE HAS just FROZEN!!! The lake is about 80% covered. The east end is the most solid, but the ice is still very thin and it is not safe out in the main body of the lake. The upper lake is more solid except down by the channel. With the cold weather coming for the weekend the lake should freeze up enough to start fishing. Stick close to shore and be careful to check ice depth before you venture out....

LARGE KASTMASTERS, BUOYANT RED/GOLD, RAINBOW RAPALA LURES AND MAG LIP RAINBOW LURES WILL WORK BEST FOR THE LAKE TROUT.  ONE OF THE GREAT ASPECTS OF THIS LAKE IS THAT IT DOES NOT FREEZE SOLID IN THE WINTER SO SHORE FISHING IS GOOD ALL WINTER LONG.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR: THE LAKE is frozen solid and people are ice fishing on it and skating. The fishing has been good for rainbows along the north shore with small jigs tipped with power bait, wax worms or the end of a night crawler. The area just east of the boat ramp can be very good.

COTTONWOOD LAKE: THE LAKE is frozen solid and the ice fishing is good!! There are a lot of fish in the lake and they are hungry. Small jigs with salmon eggs and orange power bait will work best.THE ICE ON COTTONWOOD IS ABOUT 8 INCHES AND THANKS TO THE COUNTY THE ROAD IS KEPT OPEN FOR WINTER RECREATION TO THE CAMPGROUND.

TURQUOISE LAKE: THE LAKE IS FROZEN but the ice is new and thin out in the middle. the cold nights will make it solid quickly and the fishing will be great. There are some really large lake trout in turquoise and lots of lake trout of regular size. it is a fun place to fish with lots of action. the shoreline on the east end is good for rainbows.

We have finally received some good snows and cold temperatures in the hi country and all the great winter activities are available now. snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and ice skating. it is very beautiful up here and a great place to spend some of your christmas holidays.

Arkansas river: winter fishing is now in play on the arkansas. fishermen are having the best luck with rooster tail brown trout lures, nightcrawlers and nymphs. the fish have moved into slower more protected pools to conserve enegry. best fishing is in the late morning and early afternoon when the water has had a chance to warm up a little.

twin lakes: the lake has not frozen and will remain open for some time unless the temperature drop. shore fishing for lake trout is good right now in shallow water. the lake trout are coming off of the spawn and are hungry and look for food. rainbows can be caught at the outlet of the power plant with pistol petes.

LARGE KASTMASTERS, BUOYANT RED/GOLD, RAINBOW RAPALA LURES AND MAG LIP RAINBOW LURES WILL WORK BEST FOR THE LAKE TROUT. the lake trout are coming off of the spawn and are hungry. one of the great aspects of this lake is that it does not freeze solid in the winter so shore fishing is good all winter long.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR: THE lake is still open and will not freeze for some time because of the warm weather we had in novembwer. THE FISHING IS VERY GOOD FOR RAINBOWS FROM THE SHORE WITH SALMON EGGS, ORANGE POWERBAIT AND BUOYANT LURES RED/GOLD AND BLUE COLORS. the best place to fish is around the boat ramp and on the north shore east of the boat ramp.

COTTONWOOD LAKE: the lake has a thin sheet of ice on it and with the cold nights we have had the last couple of days it should be close to solid enough to walk on by the weekend. be careful and check the ice depth before you go out onto it. the ice fishing should be great, there were a lot of fish in the lake before the lake froze!!!!

TURQUOISE LAKE: the lake is not frozen yet and it too will be awhile before it is. shore fishing is good for rainbows and cutthroats with salmon eggs and night crawlers.

winter has finally come or at least the cold has, we still do not have any snow to speak of and most of the big reservoirs are still free of ice. the cold temps will change that quickly if they stick around. shore fishing on all of these reservoirs is still very good.

ARKANSAS RIVER: THE CADDIS HATCH has moved upstream to as far as big bend and with the warm weather this weekend should make it as far as ruby mountain. PUPA CADDIS AND ADULTS WILL WORK WELL ON THE LEADING EDGE. BLUE WING OLIVE HATCHES ARE STILL COMING OFF STRONG ALL ALONG THE RIVER FROM  SALIDA to buena vista. WE HAD A WET WARM SNOW THIS PAST WEEKEND THAT MAY CAUSE SOME CLOUDY WATER ON THE RIVER, BUT SHOULD NOT CAUSE SIGNIFICANT ISSUES. STONE FLY NYMPHS WILL WORK WELL AS THEY START MOVING INTO SHALLOW WATER FOR MOLTING. MIDGES AND BLUE WING OLIVES ARE STILL THE MOST PLENTIFUL FOOD, BUT AS THE WEATHER IMPROVES FISHERMEN SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR LOTS OF DIFFERENT BUGS TO START APPEARING, EVEN IN THE SAME DAY.

TWIN LAKES: THE LAKES are ice free and the fishing is fantastic from shore.  SHORE FISHING FOR RAINBOWS IS GOOD NEAR THE POWER PLANT. THE LAKE TROUT ARE MOVING INTO SHALLOW WATER AND WILL BE HITTING LARGE LURES. FISHING THE LAKE RIGHT AFTER ICE OFF SHOULD BE EXCELLENT! TRY CASTING LARGE RED AND WHITE DAREDEVILS FROM SHORE. ARKANSAS RIVER: The caddis hatch has started down around canyon city and is working its way up stream. The hatch should hit texas creek this weekend and could possibly move up as far as stockyard bridge if the warm weather holds. pupa caddis and adults will work well on the leading edge with adult caddis the best bet farther down stream. blue wing olive hatches are still coming off strong all along the river from railroad bridge down past salida. we had a wet warm snow this past weekend with a lot of water that may cause some cloudy water on the river, but should not cause significant issues. Stone fly nymphs will work well as they start moving into shallow water for molting. midges and blue wing olives are still the most plentiful food, but as the weather improves fishermen should be prepared for lots of different bugs to start appearing, even in the same day.

TWIN LAKES: The lakes still have ice on them but are no longer safe to be on. the upper end of the lower lake is open along the south shore down to Mackinaw point and it will not be long before the whole lake is open. shore fishing for rainbows is good near the power plant. the lake trout are moving into shallow water and will be hitting large lures. fishing the lake right after ice off should be excellent! try casting large red and white daredevils from shore. Size 1 ounce!

mount elbert forebay: this lake is open and fishing is good for rainbows and lake trout from shore. pistol petes for the rainbows are best, eggs sucking leaches in green and black and brown maribou. the lake trout will hit large red and white daredevils and mack's rainbow flat fish.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR: the ice is off the lake and shore fishing is good for rainbows using pistol petes and red/gold buoyant lures. the large daredevils will work cast from shore on the tiger muskies on the southeast corner of the lake. Clear creek is closed to boating until may.

May 1- May 19, Ramp and Inspection Thurs. to Mon. 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. May 21 - September 7, Thurs. to Mon 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. September 10 – September 28, Thurs –Monday 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.

TURQUOISE LAKE: LAKE IS STILL FROZEN BUT AGAIN BE CAREFUL ALONG THE SHORELINE. THIS LAKE IS MORE SOLID THAN MOST OF THE OTHERS, BUT THE WARM WEATHER CAN CHANGE THAT QUICKLY. FISHing IS GOOD FOR LAKE TROUT AND RAINBOWS AND IT IS STILL WORTH THE TRIP TO FISH HERE.

COTTONWOOD LAKE: LAKE IS open on the upper end down to about half way. fishing is great with pistol petes cast along the edge of the ice. we had a big snow storm last weekend, but the road should be open by the weekend.

WRIGHTS LAKE and chalk lake: These lAKE are FREE OF ICE AND are VERY GOOD SPRING FISHING RIGHT NOW. THERE ARE SOME NICE MIDGE HATCHES HAPPENING AND THERE ARE BROWNS AND RAINBOWS FEEDING. salmon eggs at chalk lake are working really well. also casting red and white mepps lure size 1 is working.

this last spring snow storm dumped around 12-14 inches of snow on the ground in the area, but it is melting fast and most should be gone by friday as the weather warms up. ice off is the best time to fish many of the lakes and reservoirs. they river is going to be fantastic this weekend and so will the weather.

ARKANSAS RIVER: April has been warm and windy, but the fishing on the ARkansas is really picking up! THERE ARE SOME GOOD HATCHES STARTING BLUE WING OLIVE HATCHES and midges are most of what you will see right now. NYMPHS ARE STILL THE BEST FOR THE FLIES, golden stones, green copper johns and pheasant tail. PANTHER MARTIN LURES ARE working well right now especially the yellow and red spot bodies.

TWIN LAKES: THE LAKES ARE STILL FROZEN AND ICE FISHING IS STILL GOOD, BUT THE WARM WEATHER IS MAKING THE ICE SOFT IN SOME PLACES. The challenge is getting onto the ice because the shoreline in starting to open up. You may have to jump to get to the solid ice. if they are generating electricity you could get stuck on the ice!! RAINBOW FISHING IS GOOD at the power plant and some lake trout can be caught their as well.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR: the same ice conditions exit here with the shore starting to open up. there is open water on the upper end and fish are being caught casting from shore.

TURQUOISE LAKE: LAKE IS STILL FROZEN but again be careful along the shoreline. This lake is more solid than most of the others, but the warm weather can change that quickly. fish is good for lake trout and rainbows and it is still worth the trip to fish here.

COTTONWOOD LAKE: lake is frozen with soft shorelines and open water on the upper end. fishing is still great through the ice and a lot of nice fish are being caught.

wrights lake: this lake is free of ice and is very good spring fishing right now. there are some nice midge hatches happening and there are browns and rainbows feeding.

It is beautiful in the mountains right now and there is lots to do with very little snow in the lower elevations. the river is looking and fishing great right now and the water is just right!

ARKANSAS RIVER: Once again this year we are having an early spring in march just like we did last year. this means that the fishing in the arkansas is really picking up with the warm days. there are some good hatches starting and with a little clouds this weekend we should have some blue wing olive hatches. Nymphs are still the best for the flies. Panther martin lures are starting to work well also on the river.

TWIN LAKES: THE LAKES ARE still FROZEN and ice fishing is still good, but the warm weather is making the ice soft in some places so driving is not recommended. RAINBOW FISHING IS GOOD ALONG THE SOUTH SHORE ON BOTH LAKES. FISHING JUST OFF OF ROCKY POINT BY THE BOAT RAMP IS SURPRISINGLY GOOD FISHING FOR LAKE TROUT. TUBE JIGS TIPPED WITH SUCKER MEAT ARE WORKING. WHITE, CHARTREUSE, AND GLOW ARE THE BEST COLORS.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR: THIS IS still A HOT SPOT FOR ICE FISHING RIGHT NOW. the ice is still good on clear creek for hiking and SKIING ON. RAINBOWS AND KOKANEE ARE BOTH BEING CAUGHT THROUGH THE ICE RIGHT NOW. THE NORTH SHORELINE NEAR THE BOAT RAMP IS THE MOST POPULAR, BUT FOR THOSE STOUT ENOUGH THE SOUTH SHORE IS BEST AND THE SOUTH EAST CORNER HAS POTENTIAL FOR LARGE TIGER MUSKIES.

TURQUOISE LAKE: LAKE IS STILL FROZEN AND FISHING IS GOOD ON THE EAST END JUST TO THE NORTH OF THE DAM. tHERE IS SOME SHALLOW WATER HERE AS WELL AS DEEP WATER NOT TO FAR OFF SHORE. POTENTIAL FOR SOME DECENT LAKE TROUT EXISTS ALONG THIS SHORELINE.

COTTONWOOD LAKE: STILL THE BEST FAMILY FISHING LAKE IN THE AREA!! LOTS OF FISH TO BE CAUGHT AND A GREAT PLACE TO TAKE KIDS TO FISH. tHE LAKE IS STILL FROZEN AND FISHING IS STILL GOOD. THERE HAVE BEEN SOME MOOSE SPOTTED WALKING ON THE LAKE ON THE SOUTH SIDE AND EVEN BEDDING DOWN RIGHT ON THE LAKE!

THE SNOW IS GETTING A LITTLE SOFT IN THE MOUNTAINS AND SO IS THE ICE BECAUSE OF THE WARM WEATHER. THE EAST SIDE OF THE VALLEY IS OPENING UP FOR HIKING AND BIKING. THE RIVER HAS SOME GREAT HIKING FISHING SPOT RIGHT HERE IN TOWN. THIS LOOKS LIKE IT IS GOING TO BE A GREAT WEEKEND IN THE MOUNTAINS.

ARKANSAS RIVER: this winter has been very cold in the valley and the snow we have had has not melted, which is very strange for us. the river can be fished to some success with nymphs and night crawlers. There is ice around the edges especially on the west and north bank. Fish the deeper pools in the slow moving water for the best success.

TWIN LAKES: THE LAKES ARE FROZEN SOLID enough now for driving on and the forest service has unlocked the gates. rainbow fishing is good along the south shore on both lakes. fishing just off of rocky point by the boat ramp is surprisingly good fishing for lake trout. Tube jigs tipped with sucker meat are working. White, chartreuse, and glow are the best colors.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR: this is a hot spot for ice fishing right now. rainbows and kokanee are both being caught through the ice right now. the north shoreline near the boat ramp is the most popular, but for those stout enough the south shore is best and the south east corner has potential for large tiger muskies.

TURQUOISE LAKE: This is a hidden secret in the valley that has a large assortment of species of fish and can be great Ice fishing. there are large lake trout and brown trout in the lake as well as decent populations of rainbows.

COTTONWOOD LAKE: stILL THE BEST FAMILY FISHING LAKE IN THE AREA!! LOTS OF FISH TO BE CAUGHT AND A GREAT PLACE TO TAKE KIDS TO FISH.

THE WINTER SEASON IS UPON US AND THERE ARE MANY MANY WINTER RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN THE BUENA VISTA AREA. FROM FISHING TO SNOWSHOEING, SKIING, SNOWMOBILING AND MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDING; WE HAVE IT ALL. THE WEATHER LOOKS TO BE GREAT THIS WEEKEND AND TODAY IS A WARM AND BEAUTIFUL DAY.

clear creek reservoir, cottonwood lake, crystal lake, hayden meadows reservoir, emerald lake and chalk lake are all frozen and people are starting to ice them.

We have very little snow in the valley right now, but the mountains have good snow and and more is expected so the winter fun is beginning in the high country!

ARKANSAS RIVER: Winter has finally arrived in the upper arkansas valley and the river is running low and cold. The fish are moving into their winter habitats after the spawn and nymphs and midges are the best bet now. Find deep pools with slow moving water and work the nymphs along the bottom. We have some amazing warm days this time of year and you can find some midges hatches and even some blue wing olives with the correct conditions.

most of the big reservoirs are closed to boating now and they are not frozen yet. bank fishing is still good this time of year on all reservoirs for rainbows and lake trout. twin lakes is a good bet for big lakers moving along the shoreline, cast large lures or big tube jigs and bounce them along the bottom as you bring them in. rainbows will be hittng small lures, salmon eggs and pistol petes on all reservoirs.

the smaller reservoir are freezing up and the ice fishing season will begin soon. Crystal lake, emerald lake, hayden meadows and cottonwood lake all have ice on them. remember to check the depth before you go onto the ice.

keep checking the fishing report for up dates on ice conditions.

the wind has been nasty the last couple of days, but is finally starting to die down. the weekend looks like it will be great for some river fishing and some kokanee snagging at clear creek reservoir.

ARKANSAS RIVER: the arkansas river is the best fishing I have seen it for this time of year! the blue wing olive hatches should be great this week with the cloudy weather and if the warm weather keeps up the caddis hatch should not be far behind. Fishermen are catching fish from the otero pump station downstream. the caddis hatch should hit in the canyon below salida any day. the river is still low and access is good.

TWIN LAKES: THE ICE ON TWIN LAKES IS gone! the lake is not open to boating yet, but they are working on it. this is very early for the lake to open and shore fishing is great. now is the time to go after big lake trout if you have a self propelled boat. the rainbow fishing is very good along the south shore and near the power plant.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR: The ice on clear creek is gone. fishing is very good on clear creek near the boat ramp and east along the north shore. buoyant lures gold/red and silver/blue are working best.

COTTONWOOD LAKE: WHAT A GREAT LAKE! the lake is open and fishing is good especially on the upper end using pistol petes. salmon eggs are also working well near the inlet.

CRYSTAL RESERVOIR: THIS LAKE IS ALSO OPEN AND SMALL MIDGES OR NYMPHS ARE still THE BEST BET.

HAYDEN MEADOWS RESERVOIR: THE LAKE IS OPEN AND PISTOL PETES OR PANTHER MARTINS CAST INTO THE INLET ARE WORKING BEST.

WRIGHTS LAKE: THIS LAKE HAS BEEN OPEN FOR A WHILE AND THE FISHING HAS BEEN GOOD WITH PISTOL PETES, DEAD CHICKENS AND GREEN STREAMERS.

THIS SPRING IS SHAPING UP TO BE ONE OF THE BEST FOR FISHING IN MANY YEARS. THE LAKES ARE OPENING UP EARLY AND THE RIVER IS REALLY GOOD.

ARKANSAS RIVER: SPRING fishing on the ARkansas has arrived. The warm weather has really brought out the bugs and the fish have responded with vigor. Blue wing olive hatches and stonefly nymphs are working best, but streamers are also working very well. The warm weather this weekend will make the arkansas fantastic!

TWIN LAKES: THE ICE ON TWIN LAKES Is pretty much shot for this season. It is getting rotten. the good new is the the forebay and the inlet to the power plant have both been good fishing. Pistol petes are working well is both places. Dry flies like grey drakes are working at the forebay.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR: ICE FISHING IS STILL VERY GOOD AT CLEAR CREEK, BOTH FOR RAINBOWS AND KOKANEE. The ice along the edges is starting to get soft especially one the north shoreline. it is still thick enough to be on but be careful getting out there.

COTTONWOOD LAKE: WHAT A GREAT LAKE! THE LOCALS ARE STILL ICE FISHING HERE AND CATCHING LOTS OF FISH. the upper end is opening up where the water come in, but the center is still got ice on it. now you can ice fish or fish open water.

WRIGHTS LAKE: The lake is open and the fishing is good. Green streamers and panther martin lures are working best now.

hayden meadows: the lake is opening up and this is the time for ice off fishing. the upper end is open and drifting night crawlers into the lake with the current works great. also pistol petes egg sucking leach with a mealworm on it is working.

crystal reservoir: This lake is also opening up and small midges or nymphs are the best bet.

ARKANSAS RIVER: Spring is in the air!!! We have had some amazing warm nice days this weekend and the river is warming up! fishing is good and the fish are getting active. Flies and lures are working well. Streamers like zonkers and lures like panther martins are best right now.

TWIN LAKES: THE ICE ON TWIN LAKES IS 16 INCHES DEEP but the snows from the past couple of weekends has caused the ice to sink so there is a snow crust on top with water on the ice making driving on the lake very difficult. I would not recommend driving any more. Fishing is still great and you can walk or ski and catch some nice lake trout. the outlet of the power plant is doing really good right now. Pistol petes for rainbow and large lures for lake trout

MT. ELBERT FOREBAY: The warm temperatures are really bringing the bugs and the fish out at the forebay. Small midge patterns work well during the day and Pistol Petes are always good. try tipping them with a meal worm or wax worm if the fish are hitting to light to hook them.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR: ICE FISHING is still very GOOD at clear creek, BOTH FOR RAINBOWS AND KOKANEE. the kokanee fishing has been better the last week, use a small green jig tipped with a wax worm. fish just south of the boat ramp.

COTTONWOOD LAKE: What a great lake! the locals are still ice fishing here and catching lots of fish. this is the spot to take the kids for a day of winter fun.

wrights lake: This lake has open water and the fish are hungry after a winter of cold. dead chickens and small nymphs together produce the best results.

Winter has returned to the Hi Country! We have snow on the ground, but it is melting fast today because the sun is out.

ARKANSAS RIVER: the fishing on the river is still really good this spring and the snows have started the blue wing olive hatches. it won't take long for the snow to melt along the river.

TWIN LAKES: The ice on twin lakes is 16 inches deep and the fishing has been great this year for really nice lake trout. the fresh snow on the ice will make it difficult to drive on until the wind blows it off so be careful. The lake trout are now a little jigs shy so smaller and less is better. The rainbow fishing has been really good this year both through the ice and over by the power plant. Pistol petes are still the best at the power plant. small jigs tipped with wax worms have been best when ice fishing

MT. ELBERT FOREBAY: ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR LAKES FOR WINTER FISHING, THE FOREBAY RARELY FREEZES AND PROVIDES YEAR ROUND FUN. rainbow fishing is still great here and with the snows some hatches have been coming off making fly fishing in winter on the forebay and new and fun experience, blue wing olives, gray drakes and blue duns with a nymphs dropper works well.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR: ICE FISHING HAS BEEN REALLY GOOD THIS WINTER, BOTH FOR RAINBOWS AND KOKANEE. The kids from the middle school in buena vista has a fishing weekend and had a great time fishing and caught lots of fish using small jigs and meal worms!

COTTONWOOD LAKE: still a great lake for ice fishing this winter. fishermen are still catch lots of fish at cottonwood lake. small jigs and meal worms are still the best bet. the snow makes it a challenge to get there until the county has a chance to plow it so check before you go.

TURQUOISE LAKE:  THE LAKE TROUT fishing at turquoise lake is still very good. fishermen are catching lots of lake trout in the smaller sizes and a few larger fish as well. the rainbow and snake river cutthroat fishing is still really good using small jigs and meal worms.

The weather has been really amazing. It is still getting down into the lower teens at night, but is warming up into the upper 50's during the day. The fishing is still great all over the valley and the hikers and bikers are hitting the trails east of Buena Vista.

ARKANSAS RIVER: Spring fishing is arriving early on the Arkansas. Fishing is really good right now and there have been some good hatches of blue wing olives. Nymphs and midges are still the best bet right now.

TWIN LAKES: THE LAKE IS still PRODUCING SOME GOOD NUMBERS OF LAKE TROUT IN THE SLOT LIMIT AND EVEN A FEW ABOve IT. THE MAJORITY OF THE ICE IS ABOUT 16 INCHES THICK EXCEPT ALONG THE SOUTH SHORE AND AROUND THE POWER PLANT. PISTOL PETES tipped with mealworms HAVE BEEN WORKING best AT THE MOUTH OF THE POWER PLANT. THE LAKE TROUT FISHING HAS BEEN EXCELLENT AT TWIN LAKES THIS YEAR. LARGE TUBE JIGS, HAVOC SICK FISH AND SUCKER MEAT ARE STILL THE BEST BET. the ice is still good and I was driving on it yesterday.

MT. ELBERT FOREBAY: One of the most popular lakes for winter fishing, the Forebay rarely freezes and provides year round fun. rainbows and cutthroats are best caught with pistol petes tipped with a meal worm. Lake trout in the Forebay are big and aggressive and will hit anything that looks like a fish. Rapalas, sick fish and large tube jigs are best.

CLEAR CREEK RESERVOIR: Ice fishing has been really good this winter, both for rainbows and kokanee. fishing south of the boat ramp is usually best.

COTTONWOOD LAKE: THE ICE FISHING AT COTTONWOOD LAKE continues to be REALLY GREAT THIS WINTER. ICE FISHERMEN HAVE BEEN DOING WELL ON IT WITH SMALL JIGS TIPPED WITH MEAL WORMs and berkeley gulp waxies . SALMON EGGS AND yellow glitter POWERBAIT HAVE ALSO BEEN WORKING WELL. COTTONWOOD LAKE IS A LOCAL FAVORITE, YOU CAN GO ICE FISHING, SNOW SHOEING, CROSS COUNTRY SKIING AND ICE SKATING ALL IN THE SAME DAY!

TURQUOISE LAKE:  The lake trout fishing at turquoise lake has been better than twin lakes recently, more fish and still good sized fish. ICE FISHING HAS BEEN GOOD FOR LAKE TROUT ALONG THE SOUTH SHORE AND AROUND THE ISLANDS. THE EAST END HAS BEEN GOOD FOR SNAKE RIVER CUTTHROATS USING SMALL JIGS TIPPED WITH MEAL WORMS OR A LITTLE BIT OF NIGHT CRAWLER.

CHALK LAKE: this lake is thawing out with the warm weather, but is still great fishing from shore. Drift a night crawler into the lake where chalk creek runs into it.

You really cannot beat the great weather we are having in the mountains. There is so much to do in the valley and right now it feels like going west is going into winter and going east is heading into spring.

there is lots and lots to do in the area from; ice fishing and cross county skiing to mountain biking.

ARKANSAS RIVER: The river has been very good in january. the warm days have the fish on the arkansas moving and feeding! Nymphs are still the best bet, but there have been some good midge hatches and even a few blue wing olives.

Twin lakes: The Lake is producing some good numbers of lake trout in the slot limit and even a few about it. The majority of the ice is about 13 inches thick except along the south shore and around the power plant.Night crawlers and Pistol Petes have been working really well at the mouth of the power plant. The lake trout fishing has been excellent at twin lakes this year. large tube jigs, havoc sick fish and sucker meat are still the best bet.

Mt. Elbert Forebay: is a very good lake for fishing and it rarely freezes solid in the witner time because of the power plant. You can catch Rainbow Trout, Snake River Cutthroats and Lake Trout.  Pistol Petes tipped with meal worms are working best for the rainbows and the cutthroats. Night Crawlers were working well fished on the bottom near the south dam and small flies work very well along the dam. Some large Lake Trout can be caught in the Forebay using large lures like Kastmaster and Rapalas.

Clear Creek Reservoir: is frozen solid and fishing has been very good on clear creek for both rainbow and kokanee.

Cottonwood Lake: The ice fishing at Cottonwood lake has been really great this winter. ice fishermen have been doing well on it with small jigs tipped with night crawlers or meal worms. Salmon eggs and orange powerbait have also been working well. cottonwood lake is a local favorite, you can go ice fishing, snow shoeing, cross country skiing and ice skating all in the same day!

Turquoise Lake:  The lake is frozen solid and Ice fishing has been good for lake trout along the south shore and around the islands. the east end has been good for snake river cutthroats using small jigs tipped with meal worms or a little bit of night crawler.

Chalk Lake: A great lake and lots of fun for ice fishing. care must be taken near the inlet where the ice can be pretty thin.

The fishing in the Valley is still excellent!!! The Arkansas River, the Lakes, small streams and Reservoirs are great fishing this time of year. This weekend looks like it will be another great one with some really warm nice days.
