Buena Vista, Colorado is surrounded by some of the best and most diverse fishing in Colorado. There are over 50 high mountain lakes within a short distance of the town and most require hiking into the back country to get to them. These lakes are stocked with Native Cutthroat trout fingerlings that are predominately Green Back Cutthroat; the endemic species of the Arkansas River Basin.

The Arkansas River has its headwaters 37 miles north of Buena Vista and is becoming one of the most popular fishing rivers in the state. Fishermen from all over the world come here to fish the caddis hatch in April and May on the Arkansas River. The predominate species in the Arkansas River is the Brown Trout with a small population of Rainbow Trout.

Numerous small creeks and streams drain into the Arkansas River from the high country and all of these contain trout populations. Many of these are filled with beaver dams at their headwaters and provide great Brook Trout fishing.

There are numerous large reservoirs in the area that are popular fishing spots for Rainbow trout, Cutthroat trout and Lake trout (mackinaw). Twin Lakes is the largest natural lake in Colorado and is a popular boating destination.

There are also many smaller reservoirs throughout the valley that have Brown trout and Brook trout populations. These are also stocked with Rainbow trout and Cuttbows during the peak fishing season providing great fishing during the entire summer and fall season. The Hi Rocky staff is knowledgeable about all of these great fishing hot spots, how to get to them, what lake's fishing is best and what the fish are biting on.
