Hi-Rocky Area Report

Spring! warm temperatures have really melted the snow in the last week. most of the low country is free of snow. the west side of the valley is still mostly inaccessible but the east side is wide open. lots of things to do. turkey season has begun and the turkeys are gobbling all around, the lakes and river are opening up and fishing is great, lower trails in the valley are becoming accessible for some great hikes and the valley is starting to come alive.

there is a lot of road construction in buena vista on highway 24 and they seem to be determined to keep customers from getting to the Hi rocky. the best way to get here right now is to turn right on cedar street and come in the back door or turn down centennial and come into our parking lot from there. the other route is to turn east at the stoplight and then turn right onto cottonwood ave and come down to the store and the parking lot on the north side of the building. don't let all of the heavy equipment parked all around us keep you from coming in.

Winter Report:

The winter had a slow start and we had warmer than normal conditions all the way into december. it was very dry and very warm, then winter came with a vengeance. We had a lot of snow both in the valley all the way through January which is unusual for us and we had some really cold days. february has been a little better, but we are still having snow off and on. the snow in the valley is melting, but the mountains are covered and look really amazing. cross county skiing and snowshoeing is fantastic right now and there are lots of great places to go and get away from the crowds. snowmobiling is also great and many of the roads are open to snowmobiles in the valley. the next few days look to be exceptional for getting outdoors and enjoying all the fun winter activities in the area.

HUNTING REPORT:

THE FIRST RIFLE SEASON WAS DIFFICULT BECAUSE IT WAS SO HOT, MOST OF THE ELK TAKEN WERE ABOVE TIMBERLINE. tHE SECOND RIFLE SEASON HAS BEEN SOME BETTER, THE ELK AND DEER ARE STARTING TO MOVE DOWN INTO THE LOWER COUNTRY MAKING THEM A LITTLE MORE ACCESSIBLE. wITH THE COMING STORMS THE HUNTING SHOULD ONLY IMPROVE.

hunting report:

The Archery Seasons and Muzzle loading seasons have ended. It was a difficult year for hunting this year, the wet summer provided forage for the animals all over the mountains and the warm weather kept them high and far in the back country. The elk were scattered all over the place and the rut had not really started by the end of the Archery Season. The upcoming first rifle season should be great if the weather continues to change and things start to cool down. There are lots of animals and they are in great condition if you can find where they are hiding. If the warm weather continues expect more difficult hunting in October!

Wet Spring!

We have had an amazing amount of weather in the valley this spring. The mountains are covered in white which is a great thing for summer fun. The rafting will be fantastic, but right now the river is all about fishing. The flows are still low enough for some great fishing up and down the valley. The whole area is incredibly green and beautiful and soon the wild flowers will be popping up all over.

SNOWING

Never post anything about the weather in Colorado, or it will change. It is snowing/raining in the valley because it is still warm, but the mountains are getting some good snow!  Would be a good weekend for Cross Country Skiing, Snow Shoeing or a Blue Wing Olive hatch on the Arkansas River.

WARM WINTER DAYS

Great warm days in the Upper Arkansas Valley! Bike riding, Hiking, Skiing, Snowshoeing, Snowmobiling and fishing. Who could ask for more!

ARKANSAS RIVER

The warm weather has brought the fish out on the Arkansas! There are some great midge hatches and the river is clear of ice and the banks are even clearing up making fishing really good for this time of year.

Cottonwood Lake

Cottonwood Lake has been an ice fishing Hot Spot this winter! It is a beautiful lake with fantastic views and the fishing has been great.

Clear Creek Reservoir

Clear Creek Reservoir is frozen solid and ice fishing is great! They are starting to catch Kokanee through the ice now.

Twin Lakes

Twin Lakes has good ice on it and vehicles are driving out on the ice. The west end is still dangerous because of the Power Plant.

Turquoise Lake

Turquoise Lake is frozen and Lake Trout fishing is very good.

Cottonwood Pass

Cottonwood Pass is closed.
